Abstract

Persistence seed quality from the harvest time up to the seed is planted is imperative to assure its planting value. Soybean seed treatment before storage can help to improve their viability during storage and when planted. Thus, the purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the effect of seed priming using poly ethylene glycol (PEG 6000) with different osmotic potentials (-0.2, -0.5 and -1.1 MPa) for different durations (6, 12 and 18 h) on seed quality of soybean cultivar Giza 35 during storage periods (0, 2, 4, 6 months). A laboratory experiment was carried out under the laboratory natural conditions of Seed Technology Research Unit in Mansoura, Dakahlia Governorate, Egypt. Seed priming by using PEG 6000 with osmotic potentials -0.5 MPa produced the highest values of germination %, Co-efficient germination, germination rate, speed germination index, germination after aging, water uptake %, seedling length and seedling dry weight, but exhibited lowest the time to get 50 % germination and mean germination time. Priming seed for 6 h surpassed other durations (12 and 18 h) on seed and seedling vigor characters. Seed quality of soybean Giza 35 cultivar gradually decreased with increasing storage periods up to six months. Higher soybean seed viability after 6 months storage was obtained from seed primed in osmotic potential -0.5 MPa for 6 h. It could be concluded that osmopriming seed of soybean Giza 35 cultivar with PEG 6000 as an effective way for decreasing the deterioration of seed vigor during the storage.
