Abstract

One hundred and thirty human sterni between 20 to 70 yrs of age were collected during post mortem examination from the Department of Forensic Medicine, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences Imphal after obtaining due permission from the concern parties and concern authoritis. These specimens were studied for determination of sex from the manubrium sterni and type of mesosterna among the meitei population of Manipur. Manubrium index was calculated from the manubrium and the finding showed a statistically significant difference between male and female manubrium sterni. Among the types of mesosterni, Type II mesosternum was more common among male, whereas Type III was found to be more common among female. Mesosterna which can be classified as Type IV was also found.
