Abstract

Objective: To evaluate role of Cystatin C as early renal marker in type II diabetics and patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) as well as to compare Cystatin C values with calculated GFR and creatinine clearance. Study Design: The study has been divided in 4 phases. Phase-I & II are evaluation of Cystatin C as early renal marker. Phase-III & IV searched the reason for elevation of Cystatin C in cardiovascular events. Duration of the study was 1 year. The study was done in S. Serum Analysis Centre, Kolkata. Results: Phase-I study has shown Cystatin C, Cystatin C-GFR and creatinine clearance results are in accordance. Phase-II study in type II diabetics has shown Cystatin C is as good marker as microalbumin creatinine ratio (MCR). Phase-III & IV have shown elevation of Cystatin C in cardiovascular events in adults is directly pathological and related to renal status. Conclusion: Cystatin C is early marker of kidney status and better choice than creatinine clearance and calculated GFR.
