Introduction

Underscoring the importance of the research methodology, B.N. Ghosh says, “Research is a means to the advancement of knowledge and of science, but a fruitful research study appears to be almost impossible without the proper understanding of research methodology”. Methodology in research is a way to solve the problem to unfold the probable answer, and to the test the hypothesis stated. As there are many road leading to a city, likewise there are many methods to solve problem of research. The researcher has to select one of them, which is appropriate and requires minimum efforts, time energy and money.

Relevance of The Study

The objective of every college library is the third law of library science,” Every book its reader”.
The value pf the library collection depends not on the quality of information sources but on the effective ways and means of providing and interpreting those to the library activities are not common to the users hence these should be interpreted in the easy under stable ways. The users are having different information needs. In order to provide tailored information according to their needs, the library has to develop various information services, provide the users adequate facilities for physical comfort and mental peace.
The imply the third law “Every book its reader, the following methods are followed.
Shelf arrangement s which has decided effect on the chance of a book to get its easy accessibility. Books within the comfortable reach of a reader of average height are much better used. The books on the intermediate shelves are frequently found by the readers than on the others. The third law would insist than the top most shelf of a book rack should be within the easy reach of average height standing on the floor. Also, it two rows of book and kept one behind the other row will reach the readers.
Visual device employed in its connection is the location of small attractive show-cases with books in strategic positions of the reading room and the stack room with catching legends like “Books worth looking into”, “Books of the Hour”.
“Open Access” is the favorite one. “Readers make discoveries with the frequency of visit of the library, not a day passes without some reader exclaiming with an agreeable surprise “I didn’t know that our had this book”.
Basic requirement needs to be fulfilled to attract the readers are:
• Education system
• Teacher/parents
• Librarian
• Infrastructure
• Library staff pattern
• Circulation system
• Technical processing of books
• Reference service
• User education
• Bibliographical
• Congenital atmosphere
• Marketing services.

Scope of The Study

Library helps a person to unfold his personality by revealing the potential qualities in him. Library develops the mind, the physique, the senses and the skill and nourishes the thinking capacity of the learner. It helps the user to contribute his full potential as individual and to contribute effectively to his personal development and ultimately to socio-economic developments of the nations. The education commission (1964 -1966) has made some recommendations for the successful. Functioning of a library, important amongst them are a follows.
a. No college or department should be set up without taking into the account of the library needs in terms of staff, books, journals, and space etc., Nothing could be more damaging to a growing department than to neglects its library or to give in a low priority. On the contrary, the library should be an important centre of attraction in the college campus.
b. A collection of books, even a collection of good books, does not constitute a library. Given enthusiastic teachers, “who teach with books”, and librarian who can cooperate with them in converting the library in an intellectual workshop even a comparatively small collection of sensitively chose books may work wonders in the life of students without such a staff. The most luxurious building or extensive book collection may have no effect at all.
The library should,
• Provide resources necessary for research in fields of special interest to the college.
• Aid the teacher in keeping himself abreact of development in his field.
• Provide library facilities and services necessary for the success of all formal programmers of instruction.
• Open the door to the wide world of books that lie beyond the borders of one’s own field specialization, and
• To bring books student and scholars together under conditions which encourage reading for pleasure, self-discovery, personal growth and the sharpening of intellectual curiosity.

Library

The library has been equipped to serve as an important resources and information center. Spread over a spacious 3000 sp.ft width a seating capacity to accommodate more than 100 users at a time, it has a vast diversified collection of valuable books and foreign journals.

Methodology

The data were collected from computer software which was used in Theni college of Arts and Science. The data which were stored were taken from 2001 to 2006. All the data were used for analysis.

Need for the Study

The libraries have played an important part in the student career. A college library is expected to support the objectives of the college. Thus the basic function of college library is to assist its parent body to carry out its programme. This means that it must adequately serve the needs and requirements of the teachers and students forwards reading, study and research. This can be achieved, if facilities and services are made available towards this end. In most of the colleges, teaching is examination oriented based on ‘teacher-classroom’ approach. Present day philosophy of education is that teaching should be ‘student resources centered’ later approaches leads to greater use of college library.
The concept of resources is concerned with the inclusion of documents such as video and audio cassettes, micro films, maps etc., Thus according to this approach, a college library is expected not only to acquire traditional types of documents but also a variety of new instructional aids. Through this study were can understand hoe for the students and staff used the library materials. We may come to a conclusion that how the students use the text books, reference books and periodicals. Now a day, not only the reading habits are changed but also the reading materials are also changed. In the beginning students used text books and references books only. But now many students are using incorrect, CD and floppies. Now a days all college libraries became computerized and digitalized. For the immediate need of the information to the staff and students the library must be computerized. This study very helpful for the fulfillments of the needs of the student and staff.

Objectives of The Study

College libraries constitute important segment of the social institution, which is responsible for development and spread of knowledge in the society. College have better opportunities to shape the young generation due to constant increase in the number of students who join college, this opportunity is abundantly and increasingly available. On the other hand, the problem of young generation is facing is the enormous competition in every sphere of life, especially for higher education and employment. Unless the student has full and accurate information, it will be difficult for him to get either higher education or a job. Hence, college libraries to day need to take up the responsibility of providing the students that type of information which the need, only through the study about how efficiently the library materials are used we can come to take new decisions for the development of the library and the users.
The following are the main objectives of the study.
• To find the total number of users (students) who will avail the library services.
• To find the total number of users (staff) who will avail the library services.
• To find the year wise acquisition of books.
• To find the subject wise number of books.
• To find total number of periodicals
• To find the number of periodicals according to subjects.
• To find the user entry statistics of the library
• To find the year wise circulation of books.
• To find out the number of times books circulated
• To find out the number of non-circulated books.

Limitation of The Study

The study has confirmed only Theni college of Arts and science college library in Veerapandi, Theni. The study covers only circulation analysis of lending books.

Hypothesis

The following are the hypothesis:
1. There is a difference in acquisition of books.
2. Do they have difference in subject wise number of books
3. There is a difference between journals and magazines.
4. There is a difference between subject wise journals subscriptions.
5. The performance of circulation of books according to your wise.
6. There is difference in frequency of circulation of books
7. There is more non circulated books.
